Flow by Power of X

POWER OF X is a collaborative project and think tank commited to exploring and creating positive impact at the intersection of design, art and technology.

In September 2017, a group of 10 multidisciplinary designers, first got together to create work that can shape technology’s impact on the world and create a better future. After an overwhelming amount of positive feedback on our first prototypes, we founded Power of X.

Flow Toolkit

FLOW is a toolkit and methodology that makes designing with emerging technologies and in complex systems more visual and intuitive. The design facilitated methodology aims at helping designers, individuals and businesses alike better understand and apply digital and information technologies. The aim of this is to enable anyone to create innovations based on emerging tech - something that otherwise is left to a priviledged few who have the resources and structures to do so. The initial kit is designed to adapt and incorporate new elements and discoveries as they emerge.

Understanding Emerging Technology

During our think tank residency in Thailand we were trying to understand how emerging technology, such as blockchain, machine learning and IoT can be designed and prototyped with. We realised this was challenging for many designers trying to innovate.

So we developed FLOW.

Creating a Design Language that Helps you Learn

A core idea of the FLOW kit is to help designers, businesses and individuals learn to design with emerging technologies. The language that FLOW uses is designed in a way that doesn’t only help you create the system for making your idea real, but as you do so you learn about these technologies.

By using visual and physical language FLOW lets you break down and communicate the complexity of a system in a structured way.

Iterations, Iterations…

We developed FLOW by going through many loops of iteration. We ran workshops with students, professors, experts and novices in Singapore, Bangkok and London.

We started prototyping with the offcuts from the wood workshop, post-its, some string and blue tack and quickly learned how valuable the visual and haptic bits were for creating understanding and clarity.
